Chapter Thirteen
The next night, Hannah held Lillianâs hand tightly in the back seat of the governorâs car. Lillian was trying to send comforting messages, but Hannah could tell she was nervous as well. They were on their way to meet with the governor, and even though Annabel had let them go, they werenât naive enough to believe they were yet completely safe. If the governor didnât trust them, he could easily find an excuse to kill them.
The vampire driving the black luxury sedan was another well-dressed thug, which Hannah was getting used to seeing everywhere. He had been parked in front of their hotel but had not ordered they come with him and did not seem to be watching for their escape.
After a short drive out of the city, the car pulled up to a gate in a quiet neighbourhood. Large trees lined the road, and the spread-out driveways were mostly guarded by their own gates, all closed. The driver spoke into an intercom, and the large mansion came into view as the gate slowly rolled open. It was well-lit and looked welcoming, opposed to the guarded castle Hannah had pictured. It was a country-style home, mostly made up of pale brick with dark wood accents.
The car stopped in front of the mansion, and the driver quickly stepped out and around to hold the door open for the girls. Hannah and Lillian held hands as they walked up the porch stairs. Lillian rang the bell once, and right away, the door opened. They were politely greeted by a human maid, pretty and dressed in the typical black-and-white uniform. She ushered them through a grand hallway decorated with gold statues and lace curtains, pasta large and lavishly decorated sitting room, and into a relatively small and conservative office.
It was a masculine study with dark leather chairs, shelves stacked with old books lining two walls, and a large dark wooden desk behind which the governor was seated.
âThank you, Melinda.â Landry nodded to the maid. She curtsied and stepped out, closing the door behind her. Now it was just the two of them facing the governor alone.
He pulled out large ledgers from under other papers, shuffling them around his desk. Hannah noticed the lack of a computer, which was the only thing keeping the office from looking like one of her professorâs. They sat in the two chairs facing the desk.
âSo, how is my lovely new couple?â He leaned back and smiled, showing not a hint of fang. He was dressed impeccably in another grey suit, and his wavy dark hair was gelled back. His dark blue tie was knotted tightly at his throat, but the jacket was undone so he could sit comfortably.
âWe are wonderful. How are you, Governor?â Lillian spoke calmly. She had laughed at Hannahâs suggestion to dress up for the governor. Lillian refused and borrowed one of Hannahâs white T-shirts that she wore belted at her waist and a pair of black leggings. Wanting to appear more respectful, Hannah
